Workshops #1: Nuclear instrumentation and measurement for major research facilities in the fields of fusion and fission

  • Christelle REYNARD-CARETTE (Aix-Marseille University)
  • Gordon Kohse (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Nuclear Reactor Laboratory, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA)

The development of nuclear instrumentation and measurement methods for large research facilities in the fields of fission and fusion is crucial and is reinforced by the construction of new facilities, such as the ITER Tokamak and the Jules Horowitz Reactor, which will offer new more extreme conditions requiring accurate, reliable and miniaturized hardened sensors and detectors. Nuclear aspects and constraints will increase in particular in the field of magnetic confinement fusion due to the use of the Deuterium-Tritium reaction and the challenge of controlling and monitoring the in situ Tritium breeding for future generations of nuclear fusion reactors. The workshop will focus on recent advances in nuclear instrumentation and scientific and technological breakthroughs through invited oral presentations. The workshop will cover experimental and numerical studies carried out under laboratory conditions and in real media. The workshop will also detail issues related to future challenges. Finally, one of the objectives of this workshop will be to contribute to cross-fertilization between the fission and fusion scientific communities through discussions also.
