Description
Samples of high density polyethylene (HDPE) are irradiated to moderate gamma doses 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 kGy, and studied from the point of scissoring of chains and creation of single vacancies as well as different functional groups for observation of detectable signatures. Band gaps are determined using the UV absorption spectra of samples. Also, this leads to determination of number of carbon atoms in a cluster using Tauc's relation. Data is displayed in the table below. Both are calibrated as function of given irradiation dose of the sample. Also, change of color of the sample seen to correspond to the dose.
Dose Eg (eV) N
Pristine 2.91 6.26
10 kGy 2.69 6.77
20 kGy 2.63 6.94
30 kGy 2.61 6.97
40 kGy 2.57 7.09
50 kGy 2.41 7.56
